Validate a tax return

Before you can lodge a tax return, you'll need to validate the tax return to ensure that the return is complete and compliant with the ATO.

When validating a return, you may be presented with two types of validation messages:

  1. Validations Errors: these must be resolved to ensure that the tax return satisfies against the ATO rules. You cannot lodge a tax return if there are validation errors present.
  2. Validation Messages: these are precautionary messages to check if the data entered is correct or missing. You can still lodge a tax return where validation warnings are present.

Prerequisite

How to validate a tax return

  1. Open the tax return and enter all the required information to complete the tax return.
  2. Once you have entered the data, select Validate to begin the validation check.
The validation results will display at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click on any entry to be taken to the error in the tax return or schedule and update the data accordingly.
  4. Once you have updated the details, select Validate again to refresh the validation process.
  5. You will need to continue this process until all validations errors are resolved.

Note: If a validation error states that a schedule must be attached, clicking on the error may not open that schedule. Click the Schedules tab and navigate to the schedule mentioned in the validation error.
